200-plus participants expected to compete

Posted

CHELAN - Two hundred-plus children and teens are gearing up to compete in nine age group categories  in next weekend’s Chelan Junior Rodeo. Anna Gilpin, Hayley Stocker, Gracie Stocker Walsh and Hunter Nussbaumer will be showing off their skill sets in multiple rodeo events starting August 3 at 10:00 a.m. “Everybody should come out, it’s just not only for hard-core rodeo kids, it is a community event,” said Kelly Gilpin, Chair of the Chelan Jr. Rodeo Committee.

Hailey Stocker
For the second consecutive year, twelve-year old Hayley Stocker will be jumping on her horse Grace and be a part of Jr. Rodeo. In order to compete in pole bending, barreling and roping, Hailey practices at least twice a week. “It is very inspiring to me and it is your time to shine in front of the crowd,” responded Hayley as to why she does Jr. Rodeo. Hayley describes her relationship with the rest of her rodeo teammates to be positive. Hayley is a Chelan Saddle Club member and she is also involved with 4H.

Hunter Nussbaumer
At 14 years old Hunter from Medical Lake says he has done rodeo events all of his short life. This year he will engage in three intermediate rodeo events and he is no newbie to the Chelan Jr. Rodeo as he has participated in roughly eight of them. Hunter, is a true cowboy and travels around to every rodeo competition in the state. “I just love it here,” said Hunter; “the people are really cool.” Hunter also mentioned that Bar-X, this year’s rodeo stock contractor, supplies him with the majority of his practice stock which helps him with the competition.

Anna Gilpin
The fun atmosphere of the rodeo was what triggered Anna into getting involved three years ago. Anna and her horse, Mikey, practice everyday to perfect moves and bond. Nine year-old Anna enjoys goat flanking the most. The connection Anna, Hailey and Gracie have is unique as all three are cousins and share a passion for rodeo. Having family around makes it easier to learn and practice  new techniques.

Gracie Stocker Walsh
Gracie is keeping the family tradition of being named flag carrier for Chelan Saddle Club alive - as she will do so this year for the first time. She recalls her mom telling her about the jr. rodeo and her getting excited right away. Five years ago, Gracie began her rodeo journey when she was only four years old. Outside of her rodeo activities, Gracie plays basketball; however, she “loves riding,” and also does dance.
