Chelan baseball aims for another District Championship

Posted

CHELAN – The Chelan High School baseball team is getting ready to play ball despite the cold and snowy weather conditions.

In his fifth year coaching the Goats, Dana Papasedero is getting the team ready to compete for a second consecutive District Championship. Last year, the Goats won the championship after defeating the Cashmere Bulldogs 10-6. In the 2017 -2018 season the team won 13 out 19 games and this year Papasedoro hopes to win even more.

“We didn’t graduate any seniors last year at all, so our team will be pretty much the same … we can catch up pretty quickly,” he said. With 26 committed boys, the Goats will have enough for a varsity and junior varsity teams. Fourteen of the kids will join the varsity and 12 will be on JV.

JV is coached by Evan Reister and Derek Todd. Helping Papasedero with the varsity team is Brandon Boyd.  “We expect them to be competitive, our expectations are that we want to go and win baseball games,” explained Papasedero in terms of the varsity team. Things are slightly different for the JV team. He mentioned that for them it would be more development, that way they could contribute to varisty in the future.

Key varsity players this season include: seniors Colt Corrigan, Gage Estes and Bryson Darlington; juniors Connor Wilson, Breckin Sporseen and Cade Christopherson, along with sophomore Drake Bird.

“Our strengths are our offense, we got a lot of big kids, the majority of our kids are over six feet tall and big strong kids … overall strong defense but pitching wise we six or seven deep lead by Connor Wilson, Cade Christopherson, Sam Austin, Drake Bird and Kenny Reeves,” said coach.

Papasedero believes that the boys’ friendship contributes to success of the program. “We are not playing with our teammates, we are playing for our teammates.”

At the moment, the Goats have been practicing in the Mountain Goat Field parking lot and are still uncertain as to when they will get to play their first game due to the weather and snow on the field.
