Chelan Goats golf teams to push for state

Posted

CHELAN - With many rule changes, the Chelan High School boys and girls golf team has spent majority of the time reviewing and learning the news rules for the upcoming season.

The team has been practicing full swings indoors at the Community Gym and also practicing their aim. Coaching the teams for the 11th year is Kirk Einspahr, who thinks the team’s first time on the golf course will be on March 20.

As every other spring sport, golf has been hit by the unfortunate weather conditions and so far the team’s jamboree has been cancelled. “I wouldn’t be surprised if anything before spring break gets cancelled at this rate,” said coach.

The girls’ golf team has three returning players, a senior, junior and a sophomore. While the boys’ team has eight returning since only one senior graduated last year. “I got my number one boy returning, he is only a sophomore this year, he was my number one boy last year as a freshman. He went to state and I expect him to be there and do a better job than he did,” Einsaphr said.

Last year, the boys’ won the CTL league and were Distrcit 6 champs, they were undefeated in league matches. Due to this, coach wants the boys’ to repeat that accomplishment once again.

The girls’ team was defeated during the district championship game last year. In the previous seven years before that they were champions. It would be a great accomplishment if the girls claim back that title this year. Cascade High School will be tough competitors for both teams along with Omak High School. Chelan will have 18 golf players altogether this season which  “helps put pressure on the other guys.”

Coach Einsaphr is excited for the season to get started and hopes to send three girls and three boys to state this year, “the golf program is one of the most successful athletic programs in the school, I want to keep that going and go from there.”
