Chelan will have 11 student-athletes attend the State Track meet

CASHMERE - It was a great couple of days for Chelan track and field.  The district meet in Cashmere began on Thursday (May 16) evening and was only able to get through the first few events before we were rained out.  As of last night, prior to the meet being postponed, Elly Collins and Matea Ivory were our only two qualifiers. Elly qualified in the pole vault and won the 100 M hurdles. Matea ran her best time of the season winning the open 100 M while Molly Oswald took second and missed qualifying by less than 0.02 seconds.

On Friday, (May 17), our meet began with both of our 4x100 M relay teams.  Both teams qualified.  Our boys’ team, made up of Bert Mendivil, Rolando Virrueta, Skylar Gordon, JC Austin, and alternate Kyle Jackson ran a nearly flawless race edging out Cashmere at the finish line.  Our girls team, made up of Molly Oswald, Elly Collins, Aliyah Villasenor, Matea Ivory, and alternate Lucy Bordner, struggled a bit with their handoffs and didn’t perform as well as they had hoped.  However, they still succeeded to beat the state qualifying mark and will get the opportunity to compete at state.

Another great race for Chelan was the girls 800 M.  Teagan Silva broke her personal record by over 4 seconds beating the state qualifier to make it to state.  This was quite the accomplishment considering she was fighting gusts of wind her entire race.

All our athletes competed with courage throughout the district meet.  Our distance runners had the toughest road due to the inclement weather on both days.  Chris Knight and Ezequiel Campos fought the wind throughout their race barely missing qualifying in the 3200 M and 800 M.  We only had one allocation to state this year and many of our athletes earned second place at this meet.
