Goats tennis travel to Selah for the Viking Invite

Posted

SELAH - The Chelan boys and girls tennis teams traveled to Selah for the 8th consecutive year to take part in the Viking Invite.  It's a small tournament, and Chelan is always the smallest school present - we compete against teams from upper classifications to stretch ourselves and spark growth.  This year, we competed in a round-robin format against 2A Selah and 4A Moses Lake.  Each Chelan entry competed first against Moses Lake, and then against Selah.

On the girls side, we were missing two of the top three players on our varsity ladder, but still had very positive results:
Sophomore Bella Gatzemeier played #1 singles for us today, and begun with an impressive 6-2, 6-1 win over Daniela Valdivia.  In her 2nd match of the day, she played her toughest singles opponent ever, and elevated her game to new heights, but was defeated 6-1, 6-2 by Mary-frances Ballew.

Senior Katelyn Deal played #2 singles, and opened with a convincing 6-1, 6-1 win over Saige Roylance. Similar to Bella, Katelyn also faced tough competition in Ashlynn Hall from Selah, and lost a hard-fought battle 6-2, 6-3.

Senior Sierra Rothlisberger teamed up with sophomore sister Elle Rothlisberger in #1 doubles, and the siblings won both of their matches in convincing fashion.  The Rothlisbergers defeated Warnick/Davis of Moses Lake 6-1, 6-1, and held off the talented Selah duo of Hamill/Walter 6-4, 6-1 to claim today’s championship.

Senior Cailee Parham and junior Nadia Van Wechel lost a pair of matches today in #2 doubles, but were competitive in both events.  The tandem fell 6-2, 6-2 to Cooper/Christie of Moses Lake, and lost a nail biter 4-6, 6-1,<10-4> to Selah's Gates/Bond.

Freshman rookies Ruby Wier and Ally Williams had a great tourney day as #3 doubles entries.  They defeated Bowen/Gutierrez of Moses Lake 6-0, 6-1 and were well-matched vs Hall/Gaona of Selah but came up short 6-3, 6-4.

 On the boys side:

Senior Tyler Higgins was thrust into the #1 singles role today, and competed well against strong talent, but was defeated by Josh Banda of Moses Lake and Logan LeVon of Selah.

Sophomore Aiden Peterson played his first ever varsity singles match as our entry in the #2 singles slot, fought and hustled to the bitter end of each set, but also came up short vs Matt Zimmer of Moses Lake and Aidon Franklin of Selah.

Senior Wyatt Habich and junior Tobin Wier teamed up to take on the best of Selah and Moses Lake in the #1 doubles entry.  Wyatt and Tobin lost a heartbreaker in a 3rd set tiebreaker vs Hyer/Wiseman of Moses Lake, but bounced back to defeat Harris/Berreman of Selah 6-1, 6-1.

Juniors Steven Williams and Eli Phelps cruised through their #2 doubles match-ups, topping Hetletvedt/Bousson of Moses Lake 6-1, 6-1 and handling Young/Garretson of Selah 6-1, 6-2 to finish 2-0 on the day and also claim the championship.

Sophomore Jose Torres and freshman Nate Harding earned a split on the day in #3 doubles.  They lost to Kersey/Duncan of Moses Lake 6-2, 6-4, but picked off Bishop/Godfrey of Selah in clutch fashion by wining a 1st set tiebreaker and a 3rd set tiebreaker.

Next up, Chelan jumps back into league play before spring break:  Tues., March 26 at Omak and Wed., March 27 here in Chelan.
