Trojans notch two more wins to season total

Posted

MANSON - The Trojans soccer team has gotten off to a superb start this season, with their only loss coming against Brewster, and they added two more wins to their season total this week as they swept Bridgeport in the season series and cruised past Omak on Saturday.

In their second league game of the season, Manson traveled to Bridgeport for the second time in consecutive weeks and beat the Mustangs by a final score of 5-2.

Their win over Bridgeport was in large part thanks to senior Jose Juarez, who put the Trojans up 3-0 in the first half with a hat trick.

“We began the game with great intensity, and created many chances early on, and although Bridgeport created a few chances of their own, our goalkeeper Misa Montes cleared the danger,” head coach Jared Mumley said in his game report.

The first goal of the game came a little after the seven minute mark when Aurelio Gutierrez played in Juarez who then dribbled to create enough space and scored. Gustavo Villasenor assisted the second Juarez goal and then Montes was credited with the assist in the third goal after Juarez took the long goal kick and scored.

Manson continued to dial up the pressure on Bridgeport in the second half, which eventually paid off in the form of two more goals from Everardo Rodriguez.

Bridgeport responded with three goals to close out the half, but the deficit proved to be too much.

• Omak

On Saturday, April 1, the Trojans beat Omak by a final score of 2-1 at Chelan Falls field.

“We pressed Omak early on and created a number of chances - including a goal that was called back for a foul - in the first five minutes of the match,” coach Mumley wrote in his game report. “The break finally came in the 30 minute mark when Gustavo Villasenor finished a nice team move and put the Trojans up 1-0.”

Manson continues to attack in the second half and were rewarded for their efforts when Freddie Leyva scored on a cross that made it to the far post.

Omak scored late in the 70 minute mark but couldn’t find the equalizer in the final 20 minutes and Manson pulled out the 2-1 win.

With the wins this past week, the Trojans improve to 5-1 on the season and 1-1 in league play. Manson will be given some rest during the spring break before taking on Tonasket on Tuesday, April 11. Opening kickoff is set for 4:30 p.m.
