How our elected officials represent our community

Posted

To the Chelan City Council and Mayor,

How do you, our elected officials, represent our local community and beautiful Lake Chelan?
The following are observations of the City of Chelan’s diligence in supporting Big Development and Tourism while ignoring the well being of citizens:

1. Allowing large development on old orchard land known to be contaminated with lead and arsenic (ignoring Department of Ecology’s recommendation of soil testing), thus polluting our Lake and exposing young children to more toxins than occurred in Flint Michigan.

2. When hundreds of people asked (via signed petitions) that our City opt out of Smart Meter installation, you disregarded requests to protect our health, security, safety and environment.

3. Failure to be proactive with Signage and required Boat Washes to protect our lake from the threat of invasive species, a common requirement in other areas. Boat safety is also a concern.

4. Purchasing airport land at high-price-for-low-use potential begs the question: Is this the best use of city’s funds when the community has been asking for public access to our lake?

5. Even though the Friends of the Lake, Chelan Basin Conservancy and concerned citizens have repeatedly pleaded to the Council that the Three Fingers be preserved for the public, a recent announcement indicates negotiations to designate that property to have residents with possible accommodating boat slips.
If so, will the existing public access be maintained for actual use of the public?

So, again, how are you representing our Community and Lake?

It feels to us that the local community is being overlooked.

There are currently Citizens Referendum movements (Yellow Vests) springing up all around the world.

This is happening because people feel it is time they and our environment get authentic representation, including Chelan.
