She was born in Pembina, N.D., on March 30, 1905, the youngest of eight children of Donald S. and Mary Ellen McLeod and was a toddler when the family moved to Seattle.
Upon graduation she entered an eight-week summer school course to earn her "Teacher for Life" certificate. In the fall of 1923 at age 18 she began her 42-year teaching career in a little one-room school in the Horse Heaven Hills near Goldendale.
She met her husband, Hal M. Field, while visiting her sister, Midge, who was teaching in Manson. She fulfilled her first contract before teaching closer to home (the Field ranch near 25 Mile Creek). She taught at Malaga and at Winesap. When Howe Sound Company at Holden needed a teacher-principal, she applied. She and Hal both were employed there until the mine closed in 1957.
During those years at Holden she studied tenaciously with correspondence courses and summer classes to earn her four-year Bachelor of Arts degree and was very proud of the hard earned accomplishment.
In the fall of 1957 she began teaching third grade in Chelan and remained there until retirement at age 65.
A long time resident in the Chelan area, she was a member of Silver Star Chapter No. 93, 12 Aces Bridge Club, the Chelan Senior Center and the Golden Grads of Roosevelt High School.
She is survived by daughter, Mary Ellen and husband Gene Lacy of Kenmore; three grandchildren, Michael Lacy, Melissa (Tad) Drysdale, and Janice (Tom) Coleman; and by three great-grandchildren, Briauna Tanouye, Tory Tanouye, and Drue Drysdale; also many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded by her husband, Hal Field, her parents, two brothers, five sisters and many nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers she would choose an educational fund within a local organization such as Eastern Star Chapter No. 93, or Lake Chelan Valley Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box l005, Chelan, WA 98816.
A "Celebration of Life" will be held above the boat landing at Field's Point near 25 Mile Creek on Saturday, July 31, at 2:30 p.m. There are many memories along the way, so please bring yours to share. After which, if people wish to bring a picnic supper there is a large grassy area with picnic tables. Parking fees will not be charged during the day. The gate will be closed at 9 p.m.
Our family wishes to thank all of you people who have been here for us over the past year and especially Kathy and Bob Eier and crew who made mother's life more enjoyable. She was feisty and with her sense of humor through it all, a remarkable lady.
Arrangements were by Precht Rose Chapel in Chelan.
