Building bridges: Chelan celebrates Dia de los Muertos

Posted

CHELAN - Historic Downtown Chelan Association launched the first annual Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) celebration on Saturday, Nov. 3 at Riverwalk Park.

Dia de los Muertos is a Mexican tradition that celebrates and honors deceased loved ones. Typically celebrated on Nov. 2, by putting together beautiful altars decorated with candles, flowers and food.

During this day, it is believed that adult spirits come down to enjoy the festivities that have been prepared for them.

Locals were able to get a taste of this tradition by checking out the ofrendas (altars) that were created by several teams of students from Manson and Chelan schools. The ofrendas were on display in local downtown businesses from Oct. 31 to Nov. 4.

Saturday had a little bit of everything for everyone to enjoy. Throughout the afternoon kids had the chance to hit the piñata, get their faces painted while also participating in kids activities and story-telling.

Families at Riverwalk Park got to witness the dancing horses perform, delighting more than more. HDCA wrapped up Dia de los Muertos with a parade through downtown.
