CHELAN - “Every child deserves to know, learn from, and be loved by their grandpa, and have a
grandpa experience.” That’s the belief that Rod Brooks, Founding Grandpa of The Grandpa
Project is on a mission to create and inspire.
“Three generations of my family – my father, my children, and myself – never knew our
grandpas," said Rod. I decided that needed to stop with me. “The deeper that I looked into my
vision for The Grandpa Project, the clearer it became to me that shared experiences between a
grandpa and his grandchildren are the key. It’s not enough to be present at family dinners and
special events. The real memories get made when grandpa is on a ‘date’ with his grandchildren.
For years now, I’ve been arranging for one-on-one dates with each of my nine grandchildren
whenever we are together. This summer all of them visited Chelan, and we made some special
memories together. Our dates included fishing, ice cream for breakfast, painting ceramic pottery,
bowling, feeding the ducks, and making souvenir tee-shirts – the activity was far less critical
than the time we spent together."
Now, Rod’s Grandpa Project has created the first-ever Grandpa Camp event that will be
held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, October 6 at The Ruby Theatre in Chelan. "I'm excited
to be launching Grandpa Camp in the historic Ruby Theater," said Rod. "We have a great movie
titled Paper Planes to share, along with some special, interactive activities and surprises for
grandpas and their grandchildren to enjoy.” We’re guessing that the title of the movie might be a
hint for what the activity might be. Doesn’t The Ruby have a balcony?
There will be no charge to attend Grandpa Camp at The Ruby, but space is limited to the
nearly 200 seats that are available. Rod is encouraging grandpas to go to Eventbrite (link below) to get one free ticket for each member of their group of attendees.
The first ever Grandpa Camp is sponsored in part by contributions from Deep Water
Home and Electronics and Riverwalk Book Store, both of Chelan.
