Preparations for Cinco de Mayo festivities in full swing

Posted

CHELAN – Planning the upcoming Cinco de Mayo celebration are six community members from Chelan and Manson who meet every Wednesday evening at Marcela’s Cocina Mexicana.

This event is made possible by the contribution of volunteers and donations from the public. Servando Robledo mentioned that the event will focus on uniting the Hispanic and Anglo communities with lots of family fun.

People will enjoy a parade through the streets of Downtown Chelan that kicks off the celebration on Sunday, May 5. In past years, associations like Lake Chelan Rotary, Lake Chelan Car Club, Chelan Fire and Rescue, among others, have participated in the parade. Robledo encourages others to join in the parade this year.

Family activities for the little ones in Riverwalk Park will also be available. There, the little ones can hit the piñata, get their faces painted and play a Loteria (Mexican Bingo). Mariachi music and a DJ will entertain everyone in the park.

Robledo says that he also wants people to participate by having food booths in the park. The only requirement would be to have a food handler's permit. Contact Jorge Lopez if you are interested in participating in the food portion at (509) 393-5381.

The group of organizers is working on a contest to crown the Queen of Cinco de Mayo and two princesses. So far, five girls from Chelan and Manson high schools have been registered as candidates for the crown. They will be selling raffle tickets for $2 each that will enter them for a chance to win a television. The more tickets the candidates sell the more opportunities they have to win since that counts as one of the requirements in winning the crown. The girls will also particiate in the parade and the judges will rate them for their performance in greeting the community. In the end, they will have to answer to a prompted question in front of all of the attendees.

All the money raised from the purchase of the tickets will be distributed and given to the queen and the princesses in the form of scholarships, so they can continue their studies after graduation. Depending on the funds that are collected, the committee is thinking of making a donation to a community organization that needs it.

Volunteers are also needed to help decorate downtown and clean up after the day’s activities. If you wish to volunteer contact Servando Robledo (509) 683-2300.
