True dangers of inhaling smoky air

Posted

CHELAN - With the different fires surrounding our area here in Chelan and around North Central Washington, over the past few weeks we have been exposed to poor air quality.

On August 1, Washington Smoke Information website posted that the air quality in Chelan was “unhealthy.”

What does “unhealthy” mean?

According to a news release from Chelan-Douglas Health District, unhealthy air increases aggravation of preexisting heart and lung diseases and premature mortality among sensitive populations. It also increases adverse respiratory effects in general population.

Some general precautions for everyone  to take include limiting prolonged exertion.

However, those who suffer from asthma, respiratory infections, diabetes, lung or heart disease or have had a stroke should limit time spent outdoors and avoid prolonged exertion.

Infants, children, pregnant women and adults over 65 should also follow the same safety measures.

Exposure to wildfire smoke can cause short-term health symptoms including:
-Burning eyes
-Sore throat
-Headache
-Coughing
-Wheezing
-Shortness of breath
-Nausea
-Dizziness

Chelan-Douglas Health District advises to:
• Check local air quality reports and listen to news or health warnings
• Stay indoors and keep indoor air as clean as possible
• Consider wearing a N-95 respirator mask, if you must be outdoors when it is smoky
