Ocampo arrested for murder in Manson Friday
MANSON - Deputies responded to a death investigation on Harris Avenue in Manson on Friday, June 30 at approximately 5:54 p.m, according to a press release from Chelan County Sheriff Brian Burnett.
Deputies arrived on the scene and located 56-year old Maria Ocampo, a Manson resident, who was deceased. A male subject identified as the woman’s 25-year old son Rafael Ocampo was also on the scene and was detained and interviewed. He was later booked into the Chelan County Regional Jail on a count of first degree murder and for violating a no contact order.

23-year old Donghoon Lee recovered after two weeks of searching
CHELAN - At approximately 12:45 p.m. a body believed to be that of 23-year old Donghoon Lee of Seattle was recovered from Lake Chelan, according to a press release from Chelan County Sheriff Rich Magnussen.

New engineer welcomed, mapping error for The Lookout amended
CHELAN – Before the council moved into their agenda on Tuesday, July 11 they introduced Jake Youngren, who was recently hired as the city engineer with the “intent purpose” of replacing Public Works Director Dwayne Van Epps when he eventually retires.

County, SSVF partner to help veterans in NCW region
CHELAN VALLEY - Number 22.  For people that work for a veterans affair system, that number hits home.
“We know that 22 veterans commit suicide daily,” Veterans Service Coordinator for Chelan County Tony Sandoval said after a meeting at Apple Cup Cafe on Thursday, July 13. “There are two demographics, the younger generation coming back from war, and also veterans on the tail end of the Korean and Vietnam war. They all have a lot of pain and (are) not getting much help, but if vets get plugged into a VA system, that number goes down to 10.”

Manson Parks & Recreation discusses waterfront project
MANSON – Plans began for the Manson Bay revitalization project during late summer of last year. Now heading into planning and financing stages, Parks board members and commissioners were provided a presentational proposal from Pacific Engineering representative Kara Zupke. Included in the proposal were several options available to get the revitalization project in motion

Chelan City Council hears almost unanimous opinion from community concerning Comp Plan

CHELAN – Chelan City Council members commenced the final public hearing on the city’s Comprehensive Plan amendments and updates, Tuesday, August 22 at the Chelan High School Performing Art Center. Over 200 members of the community, filled the PAC as Council began reviewing the standard agenda items prior to hearing public comment.
 
Morgen Owings Elementary opens new playground
CHELAN – Morgen Owings Elementary (MOE) kicked off their first day of school on August 29 with a ribbon cutting ceremony, opening the new playground equipment for the students. After a year of planning, fundraising, and preparing the play area has been opened for MOE students to enjoy.

Chelan City Council holds special session
CHELAN – City Councilmembers gathered for a special session workshop, Tuesday, Sept. 5 at council chambers. The workshop focused on financially based topics including the current Capital Facilities Plan/Capital Improvement Plan and Financial Policies. The highlight of the special meeting however, was a guest presentation given by representatives of Gordon Thomas Honeywell Governmental Affairs (GTHGA) out of Tacoma. GTHGA offers consultancy services to all levels of government, and is experienced in working on behalf of cities, counties, and other agencies.

City Council discusses Comp Plan options
CHELAN – City Council commenced one of the last meetings including deliberation on Comprehensive Plans, Tuesday, Sept. 26. As the Comp Plan begins to come to a close, emotions began to seep through the cracks of a typically postured gathering.

Veterans, First Responders enjoy BBQ
MANSON – The third annual Veteran’s Appreciation Barbecue took place Saturday, Oct. 7 at Champion Orchards in Manson. The appreciatory gathering included free barbecue, drawing prizes, and great conversation, and was free to Veterans, law enforcement, and first responders and their families.

Chelan Fire swears in Focus Group members, sends firefighters to California
CHELAN – One item of interest on the agenda was the induction and swearing in of an advisory group, whose intent is to educate people about the fire district and its operations and needs, as well as provide input on the community’s needs, finding a satisfactory median for the needs of both the department and the community.

CVCH hosts grand opening celebration of their new clinic
CHELAN – Columbia Valley Community Health (CVCH) celebrated the completion of their new facility located at 105 S. Apple Blossom Drive in Chelan, Friday Oct. 20. The Grand Opening offered tours around the new establishment, lunch and special guest speakers, including State Representative and Lake Chelan Chamber President Mike Steele, Congressman Dave Reichert, Lake Chelan Community Hospital (LCCHC) CEO Kevin Abel, CVCH Board Member Rich Watson and CVCH CEO David Olson.

On to state for Trojans, advancing to first round of state playoffs
MANSON – The Trojans hosted the Liberty Christian Patriots for an elimination game, Friday, Nov. 3 at Manson Athletic Complex (MAC) field. In the loser-out match up, the Patriots and Trojans went head to head for a chance at the state championship …  As Liberty Christian scrambled to reach the end zone in an attempt to tie the game with only seconds left on the clock, Linebacker Fernando Flores sacked the Patriots’ quarterback eliminating any chance of a score, and concluding the game with a score of Trojans 20 and Patriots 12.

PUD commissioners choose Henderson site for new substation
WENATCHEE – Chelan County PUD commissioners Monday (Nov. 6) voted unanimously to move forward on plans to purchase property on Henderson Road for the purpose of siting the new North Shore Lake Chelan substation. Fewer than a dozen residents from the Chelan area attended the extended meeting held at 5:30 p.m. at the Confluence Technology Center.

Friends of Lake Chelan present proposed housing solution to council
CHELAN – Steve Kline and John Olson of Friends of Lake Chelan presented a “Citizen Campaign to Promote Affordable Rental Housing in the City of Chelan” slideshow to City Council at the general meeting, Tuesday, Nov. 14 at City Hall. The presentation provided thorough and specific answers to the current dilemma for the lack of affordable housing.

Chelan Fire and Rescue welcomes new fighter
CHELAN – Fire and Rescue District 7 (CFR 7) welcomed a new face to the crew of firefighters. Austin Murdock, originally of Leavenworth, came to Chelan Fire after working part-time as firefighter and EMT at Marysville and Lake Stevens fire departments.

Manson Jazz Band earns acceptance to Monterey Jazz Festival
MANSON – The honors jazz band at Manson High School has been accepted to perform at the 48th Annual Monterey Next Generation Jazz Festival in Monterey, Calif. The festival is free to the public audience, and student performers from throughout the country will perform in the downtown city streets during the three-day festival taking place March 9 through 11.

Hospital Project Manager speaks at Rotary meeting
CHELAN – Lake Chelan Community Hospital (LCCH) Project Manager Barry Leahy was the guest speaker at the Lake Chelan Rotary Club’s meeting Tuesday, Dec. 19, held at Tsillan Cellars in Chelan. Leahy boasts 36 experience overseeing major construction sites, including the Chelan Lake House. He has been involved in the vitality needs of LCCH for the past 13 years in one aspect or another.
