Beach cleanup, wildflower planting events March 25

CHELAN - “Restore the Shore” needs your help. Keep It Blue–Lake Chelan, the Lake Chelan Research Institute and the The Chelan Project from Chelan High School are teaming up to create the first annual community-wide beach cleanup Saturday, March 25, 10 a.m.-1 p.m. They also have support from Campbell’s Resort, the City of Chelan, the Planning Association of Washington and Pilgrim Lake Services.
Those wishing to participate should meet at the Lakeshore Marina Parking Lot (between Lakeview Drive-In and the go carts across from Chelan Market). Please “bring your own bag”, preferably reusable, because they want to minimize the environmental impact while everyone restores the beach. Students from The Chelan Project will be organizing groups to cover specific sections of beach.
Participants are asked to pick up all trash items and fragments of aquatic weeds on the beach and surrounding areas. Each fragment of milfoil can propagate into a new plant as the water comes back up this Spring. You will be preventing new milfoil growth and you will be reducing the total amount of organic carbon in near-shore environment by removing invasive plants and other organic residue.
Volunteers will bring their collected litter back to the parking lot where the City of Chelan Public Works will provide disposal bins. Volunteers can then go to Campbell’s for their Keep It Blue memorabilia and refreshments, noon to 1 p.m. More information at: keepitbluelakechelan.org.
Wild flower planting opportunity
Come help plant wildflowers and support our native pollinators. Meet at the Lakeshore Marina on Saturday, March 25; drop in from 10 a.m.-1 p.m to help with the planting. The Lake Chelan Rotary Club is helping with the project. They will use a mix of drought resistant wildflowers that attract and support pollinators. All ages and abilities welcome.
