Workshop: Stop the Spread: Effective Options for Managing Leafroll

Join us for this interactive workshop, discussion grapevine leafroll and grapevine mealybug management. In this workshop, Dr. Monica Cooper of UCCE-Napa County will highlight historic and recent research on the importance of roguing in managing the regional spread of grapevine leafroll disease, as well as better approaches for vector management. Dr. Naidu Rayapati will discuss advancements in leafroll testing and monitoring.

When: January 24, Walla Walla and January 25, 2023 Prosser

Time: 9 a.m. - 12 p.m.

Cost: Free, but pre-registration is required.

This workshop has been approved for three ODA and three WSDA Pesticide Recertification credits.

Cold Hardiness

Monitoring - Back again for 2022-2023

 WSU Viticulture will continue with grape cold hardiness monitoring for the 2022-2023 winter season.   Observed cold hardiness data for the Prosser, area is updated approximately every 7-14 days at: https://wine.wsu.edu/extension/weather/cold-hardiness/

This webpage also has several resources on preventing cold damage and how to respond after cold damage has occurred.

Given cold hardiness monitoring cannot be done on a large scale, a cold hardiness model is available on AgWeatherNet.  You do need a (free) registered AgWeatherNet Account to see the model:  http://weather.wsu.edu/

When low temperatures are forecasted use the model on AgWeatherNet to help prioritize which locations, and varieties, you should start with for follow-up scouting. 

The resources available on the WSU Grapevine Cold Hardiness Monitoring page above can be used to help you develop a bud collection and assessment plan. They also provide worksheets to develop pruning strategies to compensate for potential crop loss, should cold damage occur.
