Angel Mendoza Chelan’s newest 2 time state placer


Angel “Pumba” Mendoza, pictured here with Coach Wade Jordan won his first match at the State Mat Classic at the Tacoma Dome held this past Friday and Saturday, Feb. 21-22. He came one point short in the Quarterfinals losing 4-3. Needing one more win to get into Saturday, Pumba wrestled strong winning a nail-bitter 7-3. Three Chelan High School wrestlers, along with two alternates, punched their tickets to the State Mat Classic at the Tacoma Dome last Friday and Saturday, Feb. 21 and 22, earning them a send-off assembly held at Chelan High School on Thursday morning, Feb. 20 and a special send off from the students are Morgan Owings Elementary. The wrestlers were Angel Mendoza (195 lb.), Alonso Benegas (285 lb.) and Miguel Neri (220 lb.). On day of the Mat Classic: Alonso Benegas wrestled two tough matches, but came up short going 0-2. He was the only Freshman in the A1 heavy weight bracket. Miguel Neri wrestled the return state champ in his first match losing by pin. He came back strong winning his next match by pin. In his third match he came out strong getting up 4-0 but was caught in a throw in the second ending his state run. / RuthEdna Keys/LCM
