The Goats Baseball team won both “loser out” games Saturday in Wenatchee, and now move onto the State Final Four in Yakima.

Game one featured  a clean, fast paced game versus the Meridian Trojans from Bellingham.  Junior Ace, Braiden Boyd took the mound for the third ranked Goats, getting the win, while striking out seven, and allowing four hits. Noah Loew relieved Boyd in the seventh inning, coaxing a quick double play to end the game. The Goats recorded many strong defensive plays to help fend off the well  prepared Trojans. The result was a 4-0 win, Boyds tenth of the season, against no losses.

The offense was paced by seniors Ethan Strandburg, Reed Stamps, and Quin McLaren with two hits each. Stamps drove in two runs in the game .

Game two saw the Goats dominate the College Place Hawks by the score of 14-1 in a mercy rule shortened contest, sending the Goats to the Final Four. Senior Noah Loew got the start for the Goats, and he responded with a two hit, six strikeout performance to earn the win.

The offense was the real story in this one, as the Goats pounded out 16 hits, unleashing the full spectrum of their offense.  All nine starters had hits in the game with Stamps, Colt Funk, and Quin Mclaren each recording three hits and multiple RBI’s in the 5 inning game.

The Goats season record now stands at 21 wins vs. 3 losses

Next up:  State Final Four in Yakima County Stadium

Friday and Saturday, May 27 and 28.

Chelan Boys had an exciting finish to their CTL Championship match at Quincy’s Colockum Ridge GC today, that took until our last boy finished to determine the winner.  Chelan’s Joey Gasper (sr.) finished as CTL Player of the Year by shooting a 3-over par 74 and finishing in first place for the boys division.  The top 4 boys in the CTL were paired up together and ended up finishing in the top 4 positions.  Chelan’s Carson Clinton (8th gr.) finished in 2nd with a 75, missing a putt on #18 by a fraction of an inch that would have resulted in a tie and a playoff with his teammate!  Joey started off his round at 3-over par after holes 1 & 2, but played incredibly consistently over the next 16 holes, making only 1 birdie on the day, and finishing with the same 3-over par for the entire match.

Rounding out the top 4 were Omak’s Blake Sam (77) and Brady Tonasket (83).  Omak also took the final position to state with 5th place Josaya Sloan (91).  These 5 made up the First Team All League players.

Chelan’s Duke Nordby (so.)just missed out (by two strokes) as the alternate to state, coming in 7th place with a 94 (a PR), and Second Team All League.   Rounding out the scoring for Chelan, with what turned out to be the crucial score, was Chase Woodley with a 100, making a team score of 343, breaking a tie and besting Omak by 7 strokes (350).  [Omak has very good and very young teams on both the girls and boys sides and will certainly be the teams to beat next year!]

On the girls side of things, Quincy took the team title again this year, successfully defending their title from last year. Chelan was only able to field 2 players (not enough for a team score) but both girls did very well, with Arabelle Finch (so.) coming in with a 101 and taking 3rd place, earning herself a trip to state and First Team All League honors.  Kira Sandoval (jr.) missed out by two strokes to be the girls alternate to state, shooting a 111 in a tie for 8th place and named Second Team All League.  That’s really great results for a first year player!

State will be next week with both the girls and boys playing in Spokane at Indian Canyon GC, with a practice round on Monday (23rd), and first round of state competition on Tuesday with a 7 am start for the boys and 10:09 am start for the girls.  Those that make the cut after the first day (top 30 and ties for each group) will continue on to play on Wednesday for the final round.

SPOKANE - The doubles team of Ally Williams and Arden Paglia traveled to Mead High School in Spokane today for a single CTL/NEA regional crossover match, the significance being winner to state and loser out.  The CTL #2 seeds Ally and Arden faced Jaycee Goldsmith and Kate Schneider of  Freeman, also the #2 seeds from the NEA.

The match was a roller coaster in many respects, beginning at 12:30 p.m. and not finishing until after 4 p.m. due to a rain delay.

Williams and Paglia won the first set handily 6-2, but fell behind in the 2nd set 1-4, at which point the rain delay stalled Freeman’s momentum.

Matches were eventually moved inside to the Whitworth indoor tennis bubble, where Ally and Arden fought back to tie the 2nd set at 5-5 before eventually losing 5-7

In the third set, Williams and Paglia again fell behind 1-4 before rattling off a clutch string of 4 straight games to take a 5-4 lead, and eventual 7-5 victory.

It was a blessing to have the match moved indoors at Whitworth - the Chelan duo had an outstanding showing in that same venue just three weeks earlier at an Inland Empire Tournament rain delay, so they entered the bubble with good vibes and confidence.  For that reason, they took another “goat horns” victory photo in front of the Whitworth bubble.

Next up:  WIAA state tournament at Yakima Tennis Club on Friday, May 27 and Saturday, May 28.  Chelan entries:  Nate Harding in singles, Ally Williams and Arden Paglia in doubles, Charlie Bordner and Rylen Moody as doubles alternates.

May 20

CHELAN - Friday, May 20 was the final day of WIAA state tournament qualifying for the boys of District 6.  Today’s matches were played at beautiful Lake Chelan Shores, and this was the continuation from Tuesday’s matches at Harmony Meadows.

Chelan’s Nate Harding had advanced to today’s championship match by winning two matches on Tuesday, and faced Manson’s Ben Cullison in an All-Lake-Chelan-Valley boys singles final.  Harding won a nail-biting 1st set 7-5 before finishing strong in the 2nd set 6-2 to claim the district title.  He will enter the state tournament in Yakima this upcoming Friday as the #1 seed from District 6.

Chelan’s Charlie Bordner and Rylen Moody entered the afternoon with hopes of finishing as high as third, but came up short in both of their matches.  Bordner and Moody fell 7-6, 6-1 to Oroville and 6-3, 6-3 to Cascade.  Charlie and Rylen finished 6th in the tournament and will travel to the state tournament as the alternates from District 6.

MANSON - The first two rounds of the District 6 1A/B tournament took place at Harmony Meadows this afternoon.  This tournament is the state tournament qualifier for the boys players in District 6.  What a beautiful day at a beautiful facility.

The day began with 16 entrants - eight 1A entrants (4 singles, 4 doubles) and eight B entrants (4 singles, 4 doubles).  In the first round of play, it was all As vs Bs.

Chelan senior Nate Harding defeated Jameson Haworth-Bernhardson of Soap Lake 6-0, 6-1 in his opener, and then got past Rex Torgeson of Manson in the semifinals 7-6, 6-1.  The win over Torgeson punched Nate’s ticket to state, and he’ll play Ben Cullison of Manson for the district championship on Friday at Lake Chelan Shores.

Chelan senior Charlie Bordner and sophomore Rylen Moody began their afternoon against #1 seeds Connor Hardesty and Alex Owsley of Tonasket, and were defeated 6-1, 6-0.  However, Bordner and Moody bounced back with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Pershing and Thomas of Tonasket to keep their state tournament hopes alive.  Bordner and Moody can clinch a berth with a win over Burnell and Hildebrand of Oroville on Friday at Lake Chelan Shores.

Chelan senior Teagen Moody opened his afternoon against #1 seed Cullison of Manson, and Ben won 6-1, 6-2.  Teagen then fell to Eli Willard of Manson in a loser out match 6-4, 6-2.  Nevertheless, Teagan had an outstanding high school tennis career, and was a big part of our team’s success this year.

QUINCY - Chelan traveled to Quincy for the CTL Championships on Thursday, May 12 and Saturday, May 14 in the first layer of the tennis postseason.

Since the state’s 1A girls teams are not combined with the Bs this year, this also acted as a District 6 Tournament.  The combined results of Thursday and Saturday gave the Chelan girls the crown of district champions (see attached pic)!

On the boys side, the 1A boys are combined with the B schools for the postseason, so this tournament acted as a qualifier for the district tournament this upcoming week.

Ladies first:

Chelan doubles team Ally Williams (12) and Arden Paglia (11) were the #2 seed going in, and that’s how they finished.  Their road to the title match included a 6-2, 6-1 win over Hansch/Seidensticker of Cashmere and a 6-2, 6-1 win over Richter/Sackman of Omak.  They were defeated by the Kert sisters of Cashmere 6-0, 6-1 in the title match.  Following the title match, Arden and Ally had to defend their #2 finish by defeating #3 finisher and teammates Jamie Bekel/Makayla Griffith 6-4, 6-2.  Speaking of Bekel and Griffith.

Seniors Makayla Griffith and Jamie Bekel entered the tournament as #4 seeds, and opened with a 6-3, 7-5 win over Mancini/Townsend of Quincy before losing to the Cashmere Kerts in the semifinals.  Fortunately, they were able to win the consolation half of the bracket with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Hansch/Seidensticker of Cashmere and a victory over Richter/Sackman of Omak.  Jamie and Makayla are alternates to the regional crossover vs the NEA.

Chelan sophomore Maya Cowan was the biggest surprise of the tournament, entering unranked, but earning 3rd place and also an alternate spot to the regional crossover in Spokane.  Maya opened with a victory over Cassidy Gillespie of Cascade before losing to eventual district champion Marissa Grillo of Omak in the quarterfinals.  However, Maya bounced back with a 6-3, 7-5 win over Kathleen Kirk of Omak, and then a massive comeback win over Zoey Sheffield of Cascade 3-6, 6-1, 7-5 (she trailed 3-5 in the 3rd set).  Maya eliminated a 3rd Cascade singles player with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Zienna Erickson to win the consolation half of the bracket.  Maya had a chance to earn 2nd place, but was narrowly defeated by Stephanie Aguirre of Quincy 7-6, 6-3.

Junior Caelan Rothlisberger opened with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Melany Alcarez of Quincy, but then faced eventual 2nd place finisher Aguirre.  Caelan pushed it to three sets, but lost a heartbreaker 6-3, 3-6, 4-6.  In her 3rd match, she was eliminated by Ashlyn Reichert of Cashmere 6-4, 6-2.

Senior Yuly Nunez was eliminated in her opening match 6-4, 6-1 by Kathleen Kirk of Omak, but Yuly had an outstanding final two weeks of the regular season, including clinching the league title for the Chelan team with a close win over Cashmere in the final match of the season.  She will be missed next season!

The Chelan Gentlemen:

Senior Nate Harding was named the regular season CTL Player of the Year, and entered the tournament as the #1 seed.  He opened the tournament with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Noah Rose of Omak, and defeated JJ Groner of Cashmere 6-2, 6-4 in the semifinals.  Nate had to come from behind to take the singles title over Jonathon Kirk of Omak, 4-6, 7-5, 6-3 (see attached pic).  So, Nate will enter Tuesday’s district tournament as the #1 seed from the CTL.

Senior Teagen Moody entered as the #6 seed, but managed to finish #4 with some impressive wins in the consolation half.  Moody won his opener 6-1, 6-1 over Logan Thompson of Quincy before losing to #3 seed Chase Runions in the quarterfinals.  However, Teagen rebounded with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Cashmere’s Zeke Lewis and an impressive 1-6, 6-3, 6-4 comeback win over Cashmere’s JJ Groner to clinch a district tournament berth.  Moody fell to Charlie Lyons in the 3rd/4th match.

Senior Charlie Bordner and sophomore Rylen Moody entered the tournament as the #2 seed, and managed to finish at #4 to claim the final boys doubles district berth.  They won their quarterfinal 6-0,7-6 over Stenberg/Oliver of Omak before dropping their semifinal to Gonzalez/Hyer of Quincy.  Bordner and Moody bounced back on the consolation side with an unfortunate pairing against teammates Cody Sanderson and Luke Christopherson, winning 6-2, 7-6, which clinched their district berth.  Charlie and Rylen lost their 3rd/4th match to Bard/Knutson of Cascade.

Senior Cody Sanderson and sophomore Luke Christopherson defeated Goodfellow/Holton of Cascade to open the tournament, but lost their quarterfinal to eventual champions Sackman/Stenberg of Omak.  Cody and Luke rallied to beat Hernandez/Lewis of Cashmere in comeback fashion 3-6, 6-2, 7-6 before falling to teammates Charlie Bordner and Rylen Moody in their final match of the tournament.  Senior Cody was a reliable member of our lineup all year, and a huge part of our success.  Sophomore Luke will be back next year to help lead the Goats lineup.

Senior Aiden Avery and sophomore Sam Bordner lost their opener to eventual 2nd place finishers Gonzalez/Hyer of Quincy 6-3, 6-3, which ended their season.  Aiden was a huge asset to our CTL championship squad this season, one of many senior boys we’ll miss next year.  Sam will return next year to help anchor a competitive Chelan boys squad.
