Chelan High School Sports Recaps March 14 - 18

East Valley at Chelan (non-league)

March 18
CHELAN - This week was an outstanding first week of matches for Chelan tennis.  We "played up" by taking on two of the top programs in the 2A CWAC (down south).   Nobody had an easy match this week, and so we learned a lot about ourselves.  The results were very positive.
There was also a lot of spooky symmetry this  week.  The Chelan boys defeated Ephrata 3-2 earlier in the week, but lost to East Valley (Yakima) 2-3.  The Chelan girls flipped that script, losing to Ephrata 2-3, but winning against East Valley today 3-2.  More symmetry beyond that:  the Chelan boys lost all 3 doubles matches today, but won both singles matches.  You guessed it:  the Chelan girls lost their singles matches vs East Valley, but won all three doubles matches.
Despite this being a home match for 1A Chelan, we chose to play the CWAC 2A format of two singles and three doubles (rather than the 1A CTL format of 3 singles and 2 doubles) so that we could expand our varsity lineup from 7 players to 8 players.  We have decent depth in our squad, so it's nice to get more Chelan players some varsity reps!  Here are the details:
Girls:  Chelan 3, East Valley 2
#1 Singles:  Henleigh Elder (EV) def. Maya Cowan 1-6, 6-0, 6-1
#2 Singles:  Emily Knautz (EV) def. Caelan Rothlisberger 6-4, 6-4
#1 Doubles:  Arden Paglia/Piper Grossberg (Ch) def. Taylor Calhoun/Mai Mesler 6-0, 6-2
#2 Doubles:  Ellie McLemore/Josie Garfoot (Ch) def. Ceci Mendoza/Jalee Anderson 7-6 (7-5), 6-0
#3 Doubles:  Candice Ducrocq/Irene Hernandez (Ch) def. Alyx Dudenhoeffer/Hailey Bombard 6-3, 6-1
Boys:   East Valley 3,  Chelan 2
#1 Singles:  Rylen Moody (Ch) def. Carson Knautz 6-0, 6-7, 6-1
#2 Singles:  Luke Christopherson (Ch) def Logan Basford 6-0, 6-1
#1 Doubles:  Dallas DeBlasio/Ranne Meloy (EV) def. Wade Sanderson/Cray Silva 6-1, 6-0
#2 Doubles:  Brady Locke/Teegan Hooper (EV) def. Tristan & Caleb Sanderson 6-4, 6-1
#3 Doubles:  Ian Larkin/Rylan Kozma (EV) def. Ian Garfoot/Sawyer Jeffries 6-1, 6-2
Chelan JV wins:

Chelan at  Ephrata
(non-league)

March 14
EPHRATA - Back story:  Chelan played Ephrata almost exactly one year ago, early in the 2022 season, with Ephrata sweeping both the girls' and boys' team scores by a score of 5-0.  Despite that lopsided result, both schools went on to be the champions in their respective leagues for both boys and girls last season (Chelan - 1A CTL, Ephrata - 2A CWAC).  So, for Chelan, this was an important measuring stick for where we stand one year later.  The results are very promising!
Boys:  Chelan 3, Ephrata 2
#1 Singles:  Josh Mullings (E) def. Rylen Moody 6-0, 6-3
#2 Singles:  Luke Christopherson (C) def. Jaxon Whetstone 6-1, 6-0
#1 Doubles:  Van Heusden/Addink (E) def. Sam Bordner/Cray Silva 6-2, 6-2
#2 Doubles:  Tristan & Wade Sanderson (C) def. Powell Ahmann/Bowen Summers 6-4, 6-3
#3 Doubles:  Ian Garfoot/Caleb Sanderson (C) def. Jacob Wolther/Alex Adams 6-4, 6-3
This was a win for the depth of the Chelan boys squad.  I was especially impressed with how each Chelan lineup slot improved between set 1 and set 2.
Girls:  Ephrata 3, Chelan )
#1 Singles:  Lexie Diem (E) def. Caelan Rothlisberger 6-0, 6-2 (Ephrata's Diem is an outstanding player. State tournament returner from last season)
#2 Singles:  Maya Cowan (C) def. Emily Pugh 6-0, 6-2
#1 Doubles:  Arden Paglia/Piper Grossberg (C) def. Kacie Shannon/Addie Mills 6-1, 7-6(5)
#2 Doubles:  Molly Evenson/Sienna Addink (E) def. Ellie McLemore/Josie Garfoot 6-3, 6-3
#3 Doubles:  Chloe Ho/Erika Morford (E) def. Irene Hernandez/Candice Ducrocq 6-3, 6-2
We came up a hair short, but still a large improvement over our previous meeting with Ephrata.
Chelan JV wins:
Sawyer Jeffries/Ben Brownfield 9-7
Sean Rynd/Nic Diaz-Manda 9-7
Sawyer Jeffries/Sean Rynd 6-5
Nic Diaz-Manda/Anthony Tejada 6-3
Ben Brownfield/Estee Flynn 6-2
Danika Dietrich/Estee Flynn 8-6
Signe Lillie/Taylor Hatherell 8-7
Josie Bekel/Madeline Cowan 8-2
Signe Lillie/Taylor Hatherell 6-2
Indy Fielding/Katelyn Stanfield 6-5
On March 21 Chelan hosted Quincy, the first CTL matchup of the season.
