Less than a dozen players make up the Entiat tennis team

Posted

ENTIAT – The Entiat Tigers have only practiced outdoors in the courts twice this season, due to the cold temperatures and the snow. Head coach Lee Southard states that the team has had to share and rotate the gym with middle school volleyball and the high school track, “which isn’t as good but it will do.”

Four boys and seven girls make up the high school tennis team for the Entiat Tigers. The team is mainly underclass men with only one senior in the roaster this year. More than half of the team are returning students with only five being first time players.

Juniors Jaime Padilla and Yancy Ayala are two high competitors this year along with sophomore Libby Southard and freshman Cyrene Ramirez.

“To get better and improve everyday,” are some of coach Southard’s expectations. He also wants the team to work hard, “we have a good group, kids are wanting to learn and practice,” he said.

Since the team has a lot of first year players assistant coach Mandy Southard explains that they work on learning the rules, etiquette and footwork. The kids all have great attitudes and are adapting to obstacles presented  by the weather, “they are willing to shovel and then practice … it shows them wanting to be here,” said coach.

Last Friday, March 15 the Tigers faced Omak and according to the coaches the team did alright for not being on the court too often yet. The next match for the tennis team will be at home on Thursday, March 21 against Tonasket.
