Courtesy WIAA The Chelan Lady Mountain Goat Volleyball team is back-to-back state champions after the state tournament held at the Yakima Valley SunDome earlier this month. The Goats won all four state tournament games 3-0 and rarely trailed throughout the weekend. The state tournament championship caps off a remarkable season which included a regular season Caribou Trail League title, District 6 1A title, and the state championship. The Championship Game featured the Lady Goats vs Lynden Christian. The Goats dominated the first set with a 25-12 win, second with a 25-23 win, and third set with a 25-21 win. The Chelan Athletic Department will be honoring and celebrating the Lady Goats on Tuesday, December 7, during halftime of the boys varsity basketball game against the Cashmere Bulldogs. That games begins at 7:15 p.m. The girls varsity basketball team plays at 5:45 p.m. Tournament Stats from Coach Abby Phelps: As a team, we had 11 aces, led by our Junior setter Juliana Perez with 5 aces. Morgyn Harrison led the team with 18 digs. She was absolutely phenomenal defensively for us, and she played her best volleyball all year during that weekend. She will continue her career next year with Western Washington University. Olivia Strandberg led us offensively with 24 kills, supported by Makenzie Griggs and Ally Williams who both had 6 kills and an extremely high hitting percentage. Overall, I was incredibly proud of the way the team played last weekend. We definitely ended up playing the best volleyball we had played all year, and they did it when they most needed to. We did not drop a set all tournament, and I think that is a testament to not only their skill, but the mental toughness and incredible teamwork that all of the student athletes showed. However, the thing that I am most proud of is not the win/loss record, the amazing stats that they collectively put up, or the fact that at the end of the day we got to hold the big trophy. The thing that I am the most proud of is the incredible growth that I saw in each of these young ladies from the beginning of the season. They have all matured into confident, selfless, team-oriented young women, and that took a lot of hard work on their part. The thing that I will remember most about this season is the amount of love and support that these girls have for each other, and how they just went out there and had fun. Each girl made it “not about them,” and I truly believe that that is the main ingredient to our success.
