VFW gets ready for numerous events in Chelan Valley

Posted

CHELAN - Aside from Mother’s Day, the other big holiday in May is Memorial Day, and the Chelan VFW is gearing up for a slew of events and memorial services for veterans.

The events kick off on Thursday, May 25 with a parade that begins at 7 p.m. Small bites will be provided by Chelan Catering Kitchen before the parade at the Veteran’s Appreciation Social at 5:30 p.m. at the Lake Chelan Chamber of Commerce office on Woodin Avenue.

“Then on Friday, May 26, we’re going to do poppy distribution at the post office, Chelan and Manson Red apple Market, Safeway and Walmart. The poppies are free, but we do take donations as well that go into the veteran’s relief fund,” Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Officer Robert Serafini said in reference to the poppy flower, which is the official memorial flower of the VFW. “Then on Saturday, we’ll be going to both cemeteries to place flags on all of the veterans grave sites.”

If you wish to attend, Serafini said they will be heading up to the cemeteries at 9 a.m.

On Memorial Day, there will be a memorial service at Riverwalk Park by the flag pole at 10 a.m.

“On Tuesday, May 30, we will go through and pick up all the flags at the cemeteries, and then on Wednesday, June 14 we have our flag disposal for the old flags at the Fraternal Cemetery at 6 p.m,” Serafini stated. “Anyone that has some old or torn flags they want to get rid of can also drop them off by the Chelan Lighting Store and we will take all the old flags and burn them.”

The final event - as of now - is a veterans pizza and wings party at the Chelan Senior Center from 2 to 6 p.m. on Saturday, June 17. All veterans in the area and their spouses were welcome to join.
