Chelan Fire & Rescue’s new fire danger sign located at the intersection of Okanogan and Sanders says it all: Fire Danger is Extreme and the utmost caution should be used when around dry fuels. There is a BURN BAN in place. This means no burning and includes: No wood, charcoal, cardboard or other fires. Propane gas is the only flame device allowed, and needs to be monitored while being used. Chelan Fire & Rescue and the Department of Natural Resources will have five more signs like one this located throughout their 125 square mile fire district. On July 19 Chelan County Commissioners raised the fire hazard level to extreme, highest level for both valley and Chelan Mountain zones. The fire hazard levels may not come down until September. Chelan County Public Works crews are installing 70 signs around the county indicating the extreme conditions. Temporary barricades are also placed on county roads for added emphasis and public awareness. The barricades do not mean the roads are closed. They are typically placed on roads that lead to U.S. Forest Service roads. On Friday, July 23 DNR closed all recreational and public access to DNR managed lands in Eastern Washington, due to the extreme fire danger. RuthEdna Keys/LCM
