Francis Allen Boyd passed away peacefully April 11, 2020 at Harmony House in Brewster, Washington. He was born July 26, 1932, to Francis and Viola Boyd and was raised on the family homestead near Pat and Mike’s Grocery on Chelan’s south shore, next to what is now Sorrento’s Restaurant. Al was the second of four children raised by Francis and Vi.
After graduating from Chelan high school in 1950, Al went to work with his hands and learned the carpenter craft from Chuck Dolfay in Chelan, and became a skilled builder, well known and loved in the Chelan Manson valley.
Al learned all aspects of the building construction trade and was a complete craftsman from start to finish. He poured the concrete, framed, plumbed and wired, roofed, and all the finish work including the cabinets and countertops. Al started in the building trade in 1953 and never completely retired. He built actively for over 50 years. A few of the more notable projects were Spader Bay Condominiums, Pleasant Beach Condominiums, Slidewaters water
Park and custom homes throughout the Chelan - Manson valley. His greatest accomplishments, his family would say, are the homes he designed and built for his daughters-in-Law and grandchildren. Later in his business life, he developed and managed The Town Tub Car Wash and Quik Auto Clinic, as well as orchards, before selling them.
Al married his high school sweetheart, Patricia Carroll on St. Patrick’s Day1951. They had two sons, Skip and Mike. Both boys also graduated from Chelan High School, and their activities were ardently “followed” by their dad, Al. He loved any and all sports, and was a very active fan of Chelan sports his entire life. Whenever a Boyd child or grandchild was involved, Pat and Al were there rooting them on. Actually, Pat was rooting us on, and trying to keep Al out of trouble. Anyone who witnessed him at a ball game went away knowing that “Al knew much more than the coaches ever did!”
Al had a gambler’s heart. He loved the casino, stock and commodities markets, a good card game, horse races, or any game of chance. He would never be accused of standing in the background of life while it passed him by. He was involved.
Allen also was a member of the Chelan Rod and Gun Club and the Lake Chelan Eagles.
Allen was preceded in death by his loving wife Patricia, parents Francis and Viola, brother Stan and sister Roxie.
He leaves family members Skip and wife Mary and their sons Nathan (Courtney), Eric (Kim), and Greg (Danielle), Mike and wife Carla and their daughters Libby (Danny) Bennett and Kelsey (Mike) Ward, nephew Jack and niece Jean Ashby, and 11 great-grandchildren, as well as a sister, Lorrie Boyd Scharp of Duluth, Minnesota.
There are people too numerous to count, and forgive us if we missed you, but Skip and Mike want to especially thank all the healthcare workers at Lake Chelan Hospital, Heritage Heights, Three Rivers Hospital, and Regency Harmony House for their outstanding care of dad! Although he was a very independent person, he finally accepted all your care, and came to really appreciate and love you all. Also, Rob Dainard for allowing dad to continue assisting with all of your projects and feel needed. Doris Bryant and nephew Jack Ashby were also wonderful help to us getting dad to where he needed to be medically on numerous occasions. Your help was invaluable to us.
Services for Allen will be Wednesday, June 24 at 1 p.m. at Riverview Cemetery, followed by a Celebration of Life at Chelan Senior Center following the graveside about 2-4 p.m. These plans will be changed if we are still under the coronavirus restrictions.
