CHELAN/MANSON - On Saturday, June 20 members of the American Legion, Post 108 held a food drive in Chelan and Manson to support the Lake Chelan Food Bank. The Manson American Legion has been active in our community since receiving their charter in 1923. Last year the Manson American Legion was honored with the “Community Recognition” award given out by the Manson Chamber of Commerce. Thanks goes out to the Chelan IGA and the Manson Red Apple grocery stores for making space available for this important effort. Several boxes of perishable food were collected along with $1,328. Richard Springer, the Director of the Chelan Food Bank said, “We thank the American Legion for this amazing gift. This will provide food for many families struggling during these trying times. We live in a very special community where people are very kind and generous.” American Legion members taking shifts at the Chelan IGA store were Jim Young, Carole Hanson, Clyde McCullough and Jerry Ross. Members at the Manson Red Apple included Brian Strausbaugh, Dana Starkweather and Norm Manly. Besides Richard Springer, serving as Director, the Lake Chelan Food Bank has a six-person Executive Board and many volunteers; there are no paid positions. They have a 501-c-3 status so all donations are tax deductible. Because of the Coronavirus, the Food Bank is only open on Mondays through the end of June with the following rules: • 9 a.m. start time. • No validation required. • No Registration. • Stay in your car, a pre-packaged box will be loaded for you. Director Springer stated, “Recently we set a record with a one-day total of 190 families served. Each family receives 50 to 60 pounds of food.” If you would like to help out financially you can mail your check to the Lake Chelan Food Bank, PO Box 2684, Chelan, WA 98816. The American Legion and the Lake Chelan Food Bank thanks everyone for their support of the American Legion Food Drive.
