CHELAN — A chapter in Lake Chelan Valley's oral history is coming to a close as Don Lloyd, the longtime voice behind the Chelan Museum's radio storytelling program, announces his retirement after more than five years of broadcasting.
Lloyd, who has been sharing historical narratives on KOZI radio since June 2018, will deliver his final segment on the last Saturday of November. His weekly broadcasts, airing shortly after 8:30 a.m. each Saturday, have become a staple for local listeners seeking insights into the valley's rich history.
Drawing from the Lake Chelan Historical Society's extensive collection of "History Notes," published annually over five decades, Lloyd crafted three-minute segments that required between one to three hours of research each.
"I looked for stories that had some humor to them," Lloyd said, though noting he didn't shy away from more somber topics, including coverage of the 1945 bus accident and an account of a lightning strike fatality.
Lloyd succeeded Dick Simonds, who previously hosted the segment under the title "Nuggets of Knowledge." With no immediate successor identified, the museum plans to rebroadcast Lloyd's extensive catalog of stories, which numbers more than 250 episodes.
The museum has preserved Lloyd's contributions digitally, making his complete archive accessible through their website at chelanmuseum.com/story-teller.
