Living Well with Diabetes workshop returns Sept. 14

CHELAN – The  Living Well with Diabetes workshop returns Friday, September 14 at the Lake Chelan Community Hospital.

The program originated at Standford and it lasts for six weeks, each Friday participants will learn how to better manage their diabetes.

The free workshop runs from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Hospital Board Room. Celest Thomas and Agustin Benegas will be running the sessions, both of them are certified leaders.

Participants will receive a free book containing lots of helpful information and they are more than welcome to bring a support partner or their caregiver to the sessions.

“This is great opportunity for people to come together and support one another,” said Thomas.

This makes the second diabetes workshop offered through the LCCH, it was so popular within the community Thomas and Benegas decided to reopen the course.

“Diabetes is huge problem in the community with very high numbers,” said Benegas

Thomas and Benegas will teach about healthy eating, safe exercise, managing medications, preventing low blood sugar, dealing with depression and stress and working with a healthcare team.

Each session focuses on problem-solving, decision-making and coping skills which helps with live planning and accountability, “we want to empower the patients,” Thomas added.

“I really saw a lot of progress from people who were in our class, really embracing life and improving their quality of life,” said Thomas.

In the works is the possibility of having evening courses and also Spanish ones to accommodate all members of the community.
