Brush fire in area of airport goes second alarm

Posted

CHELAN - Chelan Fire & Rescue responded to a brush fire near U.S. 97 and U.S. 97A intersection in Chelan at approximately 8:52 p.m. on Thursday evening, June 8.
Due to extremely high winds, the fire spread rapidly from the point of origin uphill and threatened homes and structures in the area.  Arcing from power lines likely started the fire caused by high winds.
The first threatened home near Substation Road. We applaud the homeowners for their excellent efforts in preparing the wildland area around their homes. These efforts kept the fire away from homes and gave firefighters a safe workplace during our structure protection activities.
Heavy smoke conditions and rapid fire spread made accessing the fire difficult for firefighters during the initial phases of the fire. Landowners in the area and a former local forest service firefighter aided the crews in accessing and fighting the fire.
A second alarm brush fire response was called to help manage the incident. We received fire apparatus and personnel from Entiat, Manson, Orondo, and Wenatchee Valley fire departments.
No homes or structures were lost during this incident, but there was notable property damage.
Thank you to the firefighters for a successful incident.
Once again, thank you to the homeowners in the area for your assistance and especially for preparing the areas around your homes in anticipation of wildland fires.
