April 28

With some decent weather finally for our match, Chelan’s boys scored a comfortable victory over Quincy with a 361 to 457, with Chelan’s Joey Gasper taking medalist honors with a 7 over par 79, followed closely by Chelan’s Carson Clinton 2 shots behind with an 81.  Also scoring well was Duke Nordby with a 100 and a personal best for Decker Marlin with a 101.

For the girls, Chelan was unable to field enough girls for a team score, and Quincy’s girls were in great form, scoring a team score of 437 and looking like they have a good chance to return as CTL champs, though they should have a good battle with Omak’s girls’ team.  Medalist for the girls was Quincy’s Emily Wurl with a 98, followed by Chelan’s Arabelle Finch with a 108.  Also shooting well for Chelan and getting a personal best was Kira Sandoval with a 112.

Chelan has two weeks remaining of our regularly scheduled season, traveling to Cascade Tuesday (May 3) for our final CTL league match, and hosting teams from Wenatchee and Quincy next Thursday (May 5) in non-league play.  The Thursday match is also when we will recognize and honor our two seniors on our team directly before the start of the match, at approximately 1:40 p.m.

The Goats honored their seven seniors on Tuesday by defeating our long time CTL rival Cashmere Bulldogs with another convincing league win by the score of 12-1.

We have 7 seniors: Quin McLaren, Ethan Strandberg, Tanner Woodley, Ethan Kehl, Colton Funk, Reed Stamps, and Noah Loew, all of whom have played an integral part in our programs past, present, and future.

However, in this game, it was a junior who stole the show.  Junior left hander Braiden Boyd tossed his second no hitter of the season, throwing 66 pitches, striking out 14 Bulldogs, with one walk. Boyds mound record now stands at 7-0.

On offense, seniors Kehl, Strandberg, and Funk each had two hits apiece in the 5 inning mercy rule shortened contest. Junior Austin McCardle chipped in 2 hits, with 2 rb’s in the lopsided victory.

April 28

The Goats traveled to Brewster on Thursday to play a determined  Bears team in a non-league contest, and came up on the losing end by a score of 5-3. Noah Loew took the mound for the Goats, working hard, and striking out 8 Bears in 4 1/3 innings.

Unfortunately, that wasn’t enough to hold off a fired up Bears team that made some great plays, and were on top of their game.  The Goat offense was held to just 5 hits, with Senior Reed Stamp getting 3 of them, including a long home run over the left center field fence that put the Goats on top by a score of 2-0. In the 4th inning. The Bears answered in their half of the inning with one run, and scored again in the 5th inning, adding 3 more runs in the sixth to earn the victory.

April 29-30

The Chelan Mountain Goats traveled to Spokane this weekend to compete in the 75th Annual Inland Empire Tennis Tournament.  This is one of the largest high school tennis tournaments in the nation, utilizing almost 100 tennis courts at 12 different sites around Spokane.  In 2022, there were 47 teams registered and over 500 athletes from eastern Washington and north Idaho.   As one of the smallest schools in the tournament, Chelan still had a fun and very successful weekend.  We won more matches than we lost against the high level competition, and had several players finish in the top 5!  Chelan’s team score was 14th out of 47 teams, and 1st place in the 1A classification!

For the Chelan girls squad:

The #1 doubles team of Ally Williams and Arden Paglia had the most successful run of the weekend, finishing 3rd overall out of 40+ schools.  They were actually only a couple points shy of playing for the championship!  Their path included Friday wins over West Valley (Spokane), Selah and Prosser before suffering a narrow loss in the semifinals to University HS (Spokane) via a tiebreaker.  They capped their tournament with a win over Mead in the 3rd/4th match, played in the Whitworth University tennis bubble on Saturday.  That’s a lot of big schools that they toppled!

The #2 doubles team of Makayla Griffith and Jamie Bekel opened with a victory over Othello, but lost narrowly via a 3rd set tiebreaker in their subsequent match vs Sandpoint, ID.

Our #3 doubles team of Maya Cowan and Yuly Nunez put in a good showing on Friday, defeating Rogers and Toppenish before suffering a close loss to Mt Spokane in match #3.

#1 singles player Olivia Strandberg faced a tough draw, losing two close matches to Ridgeline and West Valley Yakima.

#2 singles player Caelan Rothlisberger also faced a tough draw, losing to #2 seed Kennewick in the opening round, but won two straight matches over Colville and Ferris (Spokane) to earn her way into the consolation semifinals on Saturday.  However, that match was rained out, so she finished in a tie for 5th.

For the Chelan boys squad:

The #1 doubles team of Charlie Bordner and Rylen Moody opened their Friday with a win over  Cheney, but lost their follow-up match in a heartbreaker to Ferris.

#2 doubles players Cody Sanderson and Luke Christopherson defeated North Central in their first match, but lost to West Valley to finish their day on Friday.

The #3 doubles team of Aiden Avery and Sam Border defeated Ridgeline in their Friday morning matchup, but then fell short against East Valley (Yakima) in a tiebreaker.

#1 singles player Nate Harding, who is undefeated locally in the CTL, started Friday with a victory over Mead, but was defeated in his 2nd match by Richland.

#2 singles player Teagen Moody lost his opener to East Valley (Yakima), but won his next two on Friday over Tonasket and Toppenish.  Like Caelan, his consolation semifinal was rained out on Saturday morning, so he also finished in a tie for 5th.

Next up:  The Chelan boys and girls both enter their final match of the regular season in 1st place in the CTL (girls are 7-0 and boys are 6-1), looking to clinch league titles in Cashmere on Thursday.
