Chelan Middle School brings circus comedy ‘Under the Big Top’ to the stage

Posted

CHELAN — The drama students at Chelan Middle School are transforming the stage into a tent full of wild antics later this month as they present ‘Under the Big Top,’ a comedy about a struggling circus trying to stay alive.

Performances are scheduled for Friday, Nov. 21, at 7 p.m., and Saturday, Nov. 22, at 2 p.m., at the CHS Performing Arts Center (at 215 W. Webster). Admission is free, though donations to the CMS Drama Club are gratefully accepted to support future productions.

The play follows the Marlow Little Big Top Circus, which is one good show away from foreclosure. The bank sends a representative to shut the circus down, but he ends up joining the clowns instead — while the bank’s secretary steals the owner’s money, setting off a chaotic search where everyone is on the lookout for the missing funds. Mistaken identities, pratfalls and teamwork ensue as the circus performers band together to save their show.

The CMS Drama Club, led by advisor Cindy Bertomeu, invites students in grades 6-8 to join and be part of the production. The drama program typically attracts more than fifty students for its major annual production.

That level of participation gives the production a real community feel — cast, crew, stagehands, costumes and set design are all coming from middle-school hands. With the performances timed just ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday, the show promises to be a fun, family-friendly outing.

Because admission is free, the club asks only for voluntary donations, with proceeds going directly toward supporting costumes, sets, and future arts programming. For families looking for an affordable weekend activity, this is a great local opportunity.

The CHS Performing Arts Center is a short drive or bike ride from neighborhoods across town, making it an accessible destination for parents and younger siblings. The Saturday matinee is especially convenient for families with school-age children and weekend commitments.

Whether you’re a longtime supporter of the school arts program or just looking for something fun and local to do, put these dates on your calendar — Fri., Nov. 21 at 7 p.m. or Sat., Nov. 22 at 2 p.m. Show up, enjoy the circus antics, and consider dropping a donation to help the next generation of performers.
