CHELAN — The Chelan High School Athletic Department has named Austin Benson as the new head coach of the Chelan Goats boys basketball program, bringing a familiar face back into a leadership role for a program he once helped build from the sidelines.
Benson previously served as a varsity assistant coach for Chelan from 2017 to 2019, where he assisted with practices, opponent scouting and offseason open gyms while helping foster the team culture.
Now he takes over the program with a mix of coaching experience, local ties and a basketball résumé that stretches from Brewster to the collegiate level.
A Brewster High School graduate, Benson played four years of varsity basketball and reached three state championship games during his prep career, including Brewster’s 2007 state title team. He later played four seasons at Doane College from 2009 to 2013, serving as a two-year starting guard and team captain during his senior season while helping lead the program to a No. 8 national ranking and a school-record 21 wins.
“This is an excellent opportunity and I’m excited to be the Head Coach of this program!” Benson said in a statement released by the school. “It’s going to be fun engaging with these student-athletes and having the community rally behind a competitive group of young men. Let’s Go Goats!”
Off the court, Benson has worked at Chelan Fresh Marketing since 2014 and currently serves in export sales, managing international market relationships. The athletic department described him as a longtime member of the Chelan community whose leadership and professionalism make him a strong role model for student-athletes.
Athletic Director Evan Reister said Benson’s familiarity with the community and focus on relationships made him a natural fit for the position.
“Austin understands Chelan, values the importance of relationships and community, and is passionate about developing young people through athletics,” Reister said. “His basketball background, leadership experience, and vision for the future make him a tremendous fit for our program.”
Chelan Athletics announced the hire as the Goats begin preparing for the 2026–27 basketball season.
