CHELAN — The City of Chelan is looking for someone to step into a vacant City Council seat, but the timing comes at a moment when the work of local government here has rarely felt more active, or more consequential.
The opening follows the recent resignation of Councilmember Mark Ericks, who stepped down citing ongoing health challenges and an inability to fully meet the demands of the role.
The city announced March 25 that it is accepting applications to fill the position, with a deadline of April 29 at 5 p.m. and interviews scheduled for May 12 during a regular council meeting. The appointment could come that same evening, with the selected applicant expected to take their seat immediately.
On paper, the requirements are straightforward. Applicants must have lived within Chelan city limits for at least one year, be a registered voter in the city, and provide a physical address.
In practice, the role arrives at a time when Chelan’s council has been navigating a steady flow of projects, long-range planning decisions, and infrastructure investments that continue to shape how the community grows.
Recent months have brought a mix of utility planning, development discussions, and successful grant applications, alongside a broader push to align projects with the city’s long-term strategy. The result has been a council calendar that rarely slows down, where decisions often carry both immediate costs and long-term implications.
For the person who ultimately fills the seat, that means stepping into conversations already in motion, where timing, funding, and community priorities intersect in real time.
It also means joining a council that has increasingly been asked to think beyond individual projects, weighing how each decision fits into a larger picture of growth, tourism pressure, infrastructure capacity, and quality of life.
City officials framed the opening as an opportunity for a community-minded resident to help shape that future.
For those watching from the audience, it is a chance to move from the public comment podium to the dais, from reacting to decisions to helping make them.
