CHELAN —The Lake Chelan School District (LCSD) announces the award of $270,000 in a Digital Equity Grant from the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) for updated computers and other electronic devices.
The grant will allow students to continue using individual devices with the addition of 600 new student Google Chromebooks. It will also purchase mobile translation devices that offer real-time conversations between speakers of different languages. In addition, the grant will support classroom technology-integration coaching for teachers at the elementary level.
In a statement issued: “OSPI recognizes that not every student has access to a high speed internet connection or other learning and communicating technologies. An essential part of implementing OSPI’s educational technology standards is advocating for funds for all districts. This helps close the educational technology gaps across the state.”
“Thanks to a collaborative effort between our technology and teaching teams, this $270,000 grant will provide our students with individual devices to enhance their learning process,” LCSD Superintendent Brad Wilson said. “Teachers will also benefit  from instructional coaching that elevates the learning process. Moreover, the translation devices will empower our newcomer students, who have yet to learn English, to engage with peers and instructors on a higher level.”
This technology upgrade is part of Superintendent Wilson’s planned 100-Day initiative to offer life changing learning experiences for all students in the district.
“It is my goal to hit-the-deck-running to make up for the lost ground of the COVID-19 pandemic and make optimum use of the assets at hand,” Wilson added. “It is our duty to provide the best learning environment possible and this technology will help do so.”
Established in1892, Lake Chelan School District serves 1,270 students with 97 percent of its students graduating in four years, according to data provided by OSPI.
