CHELAN — Inside the Habitat for Humanity store at 518 E. Woodin, you'll find a wide array of new and gently used items, including clothing, housewares, decor, furniture, appliances and much more. But within those displays, you’ll also see history, love, charity and generosity. All of it is donated, and the proceeds help build affordable housing in the Lake Chelan Valley.
That’s something that has been in short supply for years now. Everywhere you look in North Central Washington, housing inventory is low and demand is through the roof. But nowhere in our region is it in higher contrast with luxury than in Chelan and the surrounding area. All of the sprawling estates circling the lake lend an air of lifestyle that most of the people not living right on the water are having a hard time paying for.
Habitat for Humanity has built 19 homes so far in the Lake Chelan Valley, including homes in Chelan, Chelan Falls, Manson and Orondo. Now they’re looking to build number 20, and they’re asking for your help.
In fact, the family who will get the home, who live and work in the community, has already been selected from the list of applicants. The land is secured. Hammers are ready to swing. But first they need something more than the proceeds from selling your gently used Christmas sweaters or the twin size bed frame your child grew out of.
And in a program where the family themselves help build the home, you can help right alongside them — you could consider your gift a front door or a window where a bird feeder hangs, or even part of the very roof over their heads.
The family is ready, and you can help them move in without borrowing your brother’s truck. Find out how you can donate to affordable housing in the Lake Chelan Valley at https://www.lakechelanhabitat.org/donate.
