General Season Outlook: The Chelan Goats have four of their top six players returning in Boyd, Jay, Wilson and Rainville. Boyd, Jay and Wilson were starters on last year’s second place team that barely missed the state tournament. The Goats should be battling for a league and district title again after back to back second place finishes. One preseason poll has the Goats rated as the #4 1A Team in the state.
The rest of the CAribou Trail League  looks to be fiercely competitive this season. In alphabetical order, here are the league opponents:
• Cascade returns an all CTL honorable mention junior in Kaston Dillon- a physical 6’3” forward.
• Cashmere played a lot of young players last year and had a first year coach. Look for them to be vastly improved after the experience gained last season.
• Omak returns a senior All CTL First teamer at point guard in Jovan Mercado and while they may have lost Ibarra, they have added an impact transfer of their own from Wellpinit High School.
• Quincy is the defending champion and have added an all league transfer in 6-4 junior Julian Ibarra from Omak to go along with another returning all CTL 2nd teamer in 6-6 Junior Aidan Bews.
Coaches Quote About the Upcoming Season:
“We have great leadership from our returners and a bunch of hungry, unselfish, hardworking, defensive-minded players that will allow us to compete at a high level each game.  Players who give 100 percent on defense and take care of the ball on offense will earn playing time, ”  Tony Callero.
The Goats non-league schedule features a variety of opponents from various classifications around the state.
The Goats opened the season at home against the always tough 2B Brewster on November 29.
Other non-league opponents include road games at 2A Ephrata, 1A Royal and games against 3A Mead and 1A Freeman at the Freeman Holiday Tournament.
Non-league home games include Okanogan, Tonasket, and a late season game January 26 against the Preseason #3 1A team in the state:  Zillah.

Chelan 73, Okanogan 70

Dec. 13
CHELAN - The Chelan boys varsity basketball team beat Okanogan 73-70 on Tuesday, Dec. 13 in Chelan.
Chelan needed a put-basket by junior Ryan Rainville with 15 seconds left to take the lead by one. A few seconds later Rainville forced a turnover and passed ahead passed to Jay who made a breakaway basket at the buzzer for the final score.
Jay, Chelan’s 6-4 junior sharpshooter, scored 31 points and made four three throws in the final minutes of the game to help bring the Goats back from a seven point deficit with less than two minutes to play.
Braiden Boyd (senior) added 24 points and provided great leadership, rebounding, and defense.
Coach Callero said he liked how focused the boys were on the final play and loved that they got the stop that they needed at the end to win the game.
With the non-league win, the Goats improve to 4-1 overall and remain 2-0 in CTL play.

Chelan 63,
Omak 51

Dec. 16
CHELAN - At Chelan on Friday, Dec. 17,  the visiting Omak Pioneers picked up a Caribou Trail League win by defeating the Chelan Goats 63-51.
The loss drops Chelan into a first place tie with Quincy and Omak who all have just one league loss.
Omak used an aggressive, trapping, half court zone to jump to an early 11-2 lead and despite a few runs by the Goats, they were able to keep the lead the entire game.
Chelan had the ball and were down just six points in the fourth quarter with four minutes to go but a turnover and a break-a-away layin by Omak pushed the lead back to eight and the Goats would get no closer.
Omak’s point guard Jovan Mercado led all scorers with 27 and for Chelan Dylan Jay scored 21 and Braiden Boyd added 14.
Coach Callero was disappointed in the outcome but pointed to a few bright spots. “The team will definitely learn from this game. The early turnovers forced us to play from behind and we recognized the need to be more selective with our driving lanes and with our passing.”
Chelan played another home CTL game vs. Cashmere on Tuesday, December 20.
