NCW Libraries to offer virtual program on Washington's Apple Industry

WENATCHEE - North Central Washington (NCW) Libraries will be hosting a virtual program titled "Big Apples, Big Business: How Washington Became the Apple State" on April 17, 2024. The free program, offered by Humanities Washington, will be conducted via Zoom from 6 to 7:30 p.m. and live-streamed at Wenatchee Public Library and Chelan Public Library.

Amanda L. Van Lanen, a history professor at Lewis-Clark State College, will explore the transformation of Washington's apple industry and how the state became the top apple producer in the country. The program will delve into the roles played by scientists, investors, irrigators, railroad corporations, marketers, and apple growers in making apples a major business in Washington.

Van Lanen will also discuss how the history of Washington apples reflects broader changes in the American food system, which continue to impact the environment and the way people eat today.

Those interested in attending the virtual program can register through the NCW Libraries website at www.ncwlibraries.org on the events calendar. Registration is not required for the live-streaming events at the Wenatchee and Chelan public libraries.
