CHELAN — It hasn't happened yet, but Lake Chelan may already have its next Fourth of July tradition.
The inaugural "Lights Over the Lake" drone show will take to the skies above Lake Chelan at 10 p.m. Sunday, July 5, bringing hundreds of illuminated drones together in a choreographed display celebrating America's 250th anniversary.
Presented by the Lake Chelan Chamber of Commerce, the approximately 10- to 12-minute production will use synchronized drones, music and animated imagery to tell the story of the Lake Chelan Valley, from its mountains and orchards to the lake itself and the summer traditions that draw visitors to the region. Organizers say the show is designed to create a one-of-a-kind experience for both residents and visitors spending the holiday weekend in Chelan.
Unlike a traditional fireworks display, drone technology allows for intricate animated formations and visual storytelling in the night sky. Rather than a series of bursts and explosions, the drones can create moving images, shapes and scenes that evolve throughout the performance, transforming the sky above the lakefront into what organizers describe as a moving work of art.
The event marks the first drone show of its kind in the Lake Chelan Valley and comes as communities across the country prepare to commemorate the nation's semiquincentennial. Organizers say the production will celebrate not only the country's 250th anniversary, but also the landscapes, history and identity that make the Chelan Valley unique.
"This is something completely new for Lake Chelan," said Mike Steele, executive director of the Lake Chelan Chamber of Commerce. "We wanted to create an experience that celebrates both our nation's milestone anniversary and the beauty and identity of our valley in a modern and memorable way."
The free show is scheduled to begin at 10 p.m. July 5. Organizers are also seeking sponsors to help support the production.
The synchronized music for the show will be played on KOZI radio. Additional information is available through the Lake Chelan Chamber of Commerce at lakechelan.com.
