NPS announces funding to rebuild Company Creek Road

SEDRO-WOOLLEY — The National Park Service announced funding to partially rebuild Company Creek Road in the North Cascades National Park Service Complex following flood damage in December 2025.

The project would construct about 800 to 1,000 linear feet of an elevated temporary emergency road across federal lands. The agency said about 200 to 300 linear feet of the proposed alignment would extend onto land outside federal jurisdiction due to the Stehekin River shifting its course during the flood.

National Park Service officials said they will coordinate with Chelan County and nearby property owners regarding the portion of the roadway on private land to integrate it with the federal project.

In early December 2025, the Stehekin River experienced the second-largest flood on record. The flooding caused major geomorphic changes in the lower Stehekin Valley as the river moved into its historic floodplain.

About 1,000 linear feet of Company Creek Road and a 400-foot levee were lost in the event, eliminating safe vehicle access beyond the damaged section.

According to the National Park Service, the temporary roadway would restore limited access past the damaged area. Officials said the lifespan of the roadway will depend on river conditions and future weather or flood events.

The agency said it aims to complete reconstruction before spring runoff, though weather conditions such as low snowpack, unseasonably warm temperatures or early runoff could affect the construction schedule. Access in and around the project area will be disrupted during construction.

Additional recovery work is underway across the lower Stehekin Valley.

Repairs along Stehekin Valley Road are in progress, and work on the Lakeshore Trail is scheduled to begin this spring. The wastewater treatment plant at Stehekin Landing remains inoperable after being buried by mud and debris during the flooding.

The plant serves five National Park Service and privately owned residences, the marina and the Stehekin Lodge. Crews are continuing debris removal and infrastructure stabilization efforts to restore essential services.

The National Park Service said recovery efforts across the Stehekin Valley will occur in phases because of the extent of damage. Updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
