PUD Commissioners Back $4 Million Increase to Public Power Benefit Fund

Posted

WENATCHEE – The Chelan County Public Utility District (PUD) commissioners expressed their unanimous support on Monday for a one-time funding increase of $4 million to the existing Public Power Benefit fund, currently standing at $6 million, for the upcoming year, 2024. This pivotal decision, set to shape the region's future, is scheduled for formal voting in October.

The proposed augmentation is intended to empower the PUD to embark on five significant community-oriented projects while maintaining an open door for additional proposals. These initiatives include:

Expanded Fiber Network: The additional funding will expedite the expansion of the PUD's broadband network, aiming to extend access to an impressive 85 percent of Chelan County customers by 2026.

Fiber Expansion Design: Allocation of funds for developing preliminary designs and cost estimates for the next phase of expanding the wholesale fiber network. These designs will serve as a vital resource for the Fiber department and commissioners in making informed decisions.

Stehekin Reliability: The proposal seeks to explore solutions to enhance electrical capacity in the remote community of Stehekin in alignment with the region's growing and evolving energy demands.

Manson Parks Connection: This initiative envisions the creation of a connection between PUD-owned Manson Bay Park and the Old Swim Hole through the construction of an elevated boardwalk, ensuring safe and uninterrupted access and safeguarding the delicate riparian area.

Fifth Street Redevelopment: The proposed funding will facilitate the creation of an internal road and sidewalk within the Fifth Street campus in accordance with the community's redevelopment vision, ensuring a cohesive connection between separate parcels.

The Public Power Benefit program, Initiated in 2015, is focused on improving the quality of life in Chelan County. Approximately $6 million is allocated annually to support projects within the PUD's jurisdiction as a public utility. Funding is contingent upon the utility fulfilling its financial obligations.

Chelan PUD encourages customers and partner agencies to submit their project proposals each year. In 2023, 12 applications were evaluated by a team comprising two commissioners and several staff members. The assessment considered various factors such as cost, timeline, and project management.
