MANSON — As the Lake Chelan Swim Foundation closes the chapter on one of the community's longest-running water safety traditions, its final act will help keep another one afloat.
The Chelan County Sheriff's Office announced Wednesday that it has received a $14,061.75 donation from the Lake Chelan Swim Foundation to support its Marine Patrol Program after the nonprofit concluded operations in June.
For years, the foundation organized its annual open-water swim in Manson, using proceeds to provide free swim lessons and water safety education for local children. Those programs will continue through the Manson Parks and Recreation District, while the organization's remaining funds will now support marine public safety on Lake Chelan.
Foundation leaders said the donation reflects a longstanding partnership with the Sheriff's Office, whose Marine Patrol deputies have worked alongside event organizers for years to promote safe recreation on the lake, strengthen rescue preparedness and educate young swimmers.
The foundation was led for decades by Manson resident and aquatic safety advocate Viki Downey, along with director Judy Phelps and the organization's board of directors. Rather than dissolve with unused funds, the board chose to invest them in another organization dedicated to protecting people on Lake Chelan.
"We are deeply grateful to Viki Downey, Judy Phelps, and the Lake Chelan Swim Foundation for their generosity and confidence in our Marine Patrol Program," Sheriff Mike Morrison said in a news release. "Their legacy has made Lake Chelan safer for generations, and we are honored to carry that commitment forward."
The Sheriff's Office said its Marine Patrol Program has earned statewide recognition since being rebuilt in 2023, including honors for Marine Program of the Year, Marine Deputy of the Year and a Marine Life Saving Award. Officials said the donation will help continue the program's work protecting residents and visitors on the lake.
