.... And they call it rodeo

CHELAN -- From Pee Wees learning to rope a plastic set of horns on a hay bale to speeding girls on horseback with a mission, this junior rodeo had it all.
For some it was, in fact, their first rodeo and for others another notch in their competitive belt.
Saturday and Sunday, August 3 and 4, introduced many of the youngest among us to the idea that animals as fierce as bulls can actually be ridden ... and if you're good and lucky, your ride will last eight seconds.
Bronc busting, cattle dog trials, barrel racing, steer 'rastlin' and a host of many other events highlighted the beautiful weekend in August at the Chelan rodeo arena.
Even a pen of little goats that little kids loved to pet, while Rod Cool blasted some good 'ol boy (and gal) country music on the immense speakers from the tower announcer's booth.
Anxious moms and dads watched their little wranglers try their best to master the art of making much larger beasts do their bidding. A certain confidence builder that makes math homework look easy.
The weather was perfect, though the crowd was sparse. Each event had those who came to watch just for that one ride, that one attempt at roping victory or running the fastest. The never ending attempt at harmonizing riders and their mounts since time immemorial.
A bond between humans and animals some consider holy, some purely practical, but in every case, an important part of life.
Drinks and grub, a clown and all manner of critters on four feet,  ...and they call it rodeo (apologies to Garth Brooks).
