Spring has sprung – its time to plant a Pollinator Garden says Lake Chelan Rotary

Posted

CHELAN -  Lake Chelan Rotary Club has an invitation for folks anxious to celebrate Spring and get outside to dig in the dirt.  Plant a Pollinator Garden.
Karl Ruether, the current District Governor of Rotary International District 5060 envisioned a Pollinator Highway from Clearwater, B.C. down to Prosser, Washington. That’s the length of the District.  That highway would consist of non-connecting patches of ground filled with plants appealing to native pollinators.
Those pollinators: bees, butterflies, moths, wasps, birds, are declining in numbers due partly to a loss of habitat.  They are needed for the plants that feed and sustain us all.  Landowners can help by planting any size area with a diversity of plants flowering in waves from Spring to Fall.  Three different plants blooming each season will make a good basic attraction for these helpful winged workers.  Nothing exotic.  Native plants are best for attracting native pollinators.
The Chelan Public Library is a great resource on what to plant with a book Attracting Native Pollinators, yellow tip sheets, on-line access, and other advice materials.
To make the planting even more fun, Lake Chelan Rotary will award an official pollinator garden small metal sign for you to identify your efforts.  Just take a picture of your garden and identify your nine plant diversity.  Send your photo to cluna283@gmail.com.   Only 25 signs available, so let’s get planning and planting.
