Lake Chelan Community Service Council - Serving Chelan Valley for over 50 years

Posted

CHELAN - The Lake Chelan Community Services Council formed in the early 1960's with a mission to provide leadership and resources to address significant community needs in the Chelan Valley area.  The Council is a nonprofit 501(c) 3 organization recognized by Washington State and the IRS.
In the 1960's the Council provided food, child care, transportation and other services to migrant farmworkers and their families who traveled from all over the US to work on farms in Manson and Chelan. Later, the Council focused more on housing needs, offering a revolving low interest loan fund to help first time home buyers make a down payment, so they could qualify for lower rate bank loans. Kathy Miller, Council President shared that "working with banks, realtors, churches and borrowers this program was a success, and all First Home Loan borrowers re-paid their loans".
The Council now enjoys meeting for about an hour each month to learn about the important needs of a wide variety of community organizations serving Chelan Valley and to donate Council funds to their efforts. For example, when schools and libraries were closed during the pandemic, Council members worked with school leaders and staff, Riverwalk Books and other donors to provide a new book to every Chelan and Manson elementary school student... over 800 books.
The Council has awarded funds to many Chelan Valley organizations. Here are just a few:
• Manson Parks for a new playground at Singleton Park and for the Swim Safety Program.
• Thrive Chelan Valley for school supplies for Chelan and Manson students and new windows at the Chelan Teen Center.
• Heritage Heights and Chelan Senior Meals for new kitchen equipment.
• Manson Library Summer Reading Program for supplies.
• Historic Downtown Chelan Association for Music in the Park
• Lake Chelan Bach Fest for acoustic panels
• Chelan Valley Community Nurse Program for home visits and care coordination for seniors
